As our company continues to grow and evolve, we’re thrilled to welcome Afolarin “Fola” Lawal as our first GeoMarvel intern.
Fola’s first task upon joining the team was focused on ArcGIS Hub technology, with the integration of ArcGIS Dashboards to empower users with information pertaining to the air quality in their local area. Users can access the Hub site to learn more about air pollution globally, and at the US State and County levels, as well as identify steps they can take to combat poor air quality in their neighborhood.
Born in Nigeria, Fola first attended the University of Lagos, where he received a degree in Geophysics, and later continued his studies at the University of Maryland, where he received his Masters in GIS. It was in College Park, during the 2020’s Winter semester where Fola first found out about GeoMarvel and CEO Jon Nordling (who was his professor at the time).
ArcGIS Hub is a web-based platform that empowers communities and governments to make data-driven progress on shared goals. ArcGIS Hub allows users to create an interface that enables them to organize people, data and tools through information-driven initiatives. Users are able to create websites and pages, along with the ability to integrate ArcGIS applications like Survey123 to share surveys and data. Some main use cases of ArcGIS Hub focus on the creation of GIS data portals for open data sharing, projects like urban planning & development, initiatives centered on call-to-action efforts & outreach campaigns, and efforts to increase volunteer work within a community, to name a few.
Fola’s Hub Site project allows users to gain a better understanding about potential air quality issues in their area, including times of poor air quality, and how it may affect their personal and environmental health. Navigate the Air Quality Index (AQI) on both local and state levels by monitoring the EPA Air Quality ArcGIS Dashboard. The Hub Site also provides more details surrounding the dangers of smoking and how to combat bad air quality in your location.
For Fola’s next project, he will be working in ArcGIS Experience Builder. Building out custom widgets using Typescript, Javascript, and React. With little experience on the development side of things, Fola is looking to use this opportunity as a way to learn something new, and expand his GIS knowledge.
