ModelBuilder in ArcGIS Pro is an application that helps users create, edit, and manage their own geoprocessing models. Models are workflows that string together a sequence of processes and geoprocessing tools to generate a desired output through a repeatable process.
In this installment of GeoMarvel Live!, Dalton demonstrates how to get started with a simple geoprocessing model using ModelBuilder in ArcGIS Pro. The goal of this model is to identify current wildfires within a set distance of urban areas in the United States. Our model will give users the ability to select a US state, choose a buffer radius, and ultimately select wildfires that are within the chosen proximity of urban areas with the United States.
Upon opening your first ModelBuilder project, users must first locate the Analysis tab at the top of the page and proceed to click on the ModelBuilder tool. From here you are presented with a blank canvas, with a range of options to choose from that help you create and edit your models. Specific tools and features can be searched for within your Toolbox at the top of the page.
A key aspect used in this tutorial is the use of Parameters within ModelBuilder. Setting a parameter means that the resulting geoprocessing tool will have an available input value. In this tutorial, we use parameters to allow the end user to choose a US state, and to determine a specific buffer distance to identify wildfires in close proximity to urban areas. For more on setting model parameters, properties and more, explore the full Model Parameters documentation.
The simple model created in this tutorial shows how a model can be created to track wildfires near urban areas. Pulling this wildfire data directly from the Living Atlas, this data shows important attribute information like the fire discovery date, time, location and more. This authoritative data is vital for first responders who need to make authoritative decisions during emergency situations. Tracking wildfires is one of just many tasks that can be accomplished with ModelBuilder.
