ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 | New Features and Functionality

What is ArcGIS Enterprise?

ArcGIS Enterprise is the fundamental software system for GIS. It’s a complete geospatial system that powers industry-leading mapping and analytic capabilities, along with management abilities for all your GIS data. Share and organize your work, anytime, and anywhere, with these industry-leading capabilities.

ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 Release

The release of ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 is the latest of the ArcGIS 2022 Q2 releases. After 12 years, Esri is leaving the 10.x major version number of ArcGIS Server, now part of ArcGIS Enterprise, and moving to 11.0. The 11.0 release is full of new features and enhancements that include updates to the Enterprise portal, content and data management, administration, apps, and much more. Let us dive in and highlight some of the other changes users should be aware of when upgrading to ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0

Before upgrading your working environment, it should be known that ArcGIS Enterprise 11.0 includes several retired and modified workflows. For example, Windows Server 2012 is no longer supported with ArcGIS Enterprise. For additional details regarding supported operating systems, see the system requirements. These changes amongst others, are likely to impact your environment when upgrading from ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9.1 or earlier. Users should consider 10.9.1 until they are ready for 11.

One of the more exciting changes that came in this version upgrade involves the addition of Service Webhooks to ArcGIS Enterprise. Webhooks make it possible for users to create per-feature reports in real-time or enable notifications when edits are made. Users are excited about the addition of Webhhooks because this feature has been available in ArcGIS Online in the past, and now it’s making its way to ArcGIS Enterprise! When it comes to system administration, Esri has developed a new tool to help users monitor and track problems that your Enterprise deployment may be experiencing, and in turn, provide updated information about your system. This new tool is the Operational Health script. This python script was developed to scan your system workflow for any issues or concerns that might occur. This script tool can be found in your Portal installation folder, in the tools directory, and can be run from the command line.

One of the bigger changes that will occur during the upgrade process involves a drop in support for ArcMap. Any of your workflows that involve ArcMap and Enterprise will need reimplementation. In other words, users will no longer be able to publish or run ArcMap-based services. For more information on the topic, discover Esri’s Removal of the ArcMap-based runtime from ArcGIS Enterprise documentation.

Within your ArcGIS Enterprise portal, one of the highlighted sections involves new functions and enhancements to the Map Viewer interface. Updates to Map Viewer include: new feature layer effects such as drop shadow, bloom, and blur; improvements to the pop-up feature; sketch feature enhancements; and the addition of four new chart types, just to name a few. Discover Esri’s latest blog on What’s New in Map Viewer (March 2022) to uncover all the details.

In addition, several Esri raster basemaps have moved to mature support and will no longer be updated. It is recommended that users switch to using vector basemaps by default. If users have maps and apps that are configured with raster basemaps, and you upgrade to 11, those will remain configured.

ArcGIS Enterprise Server Roles allow users to extend the functionality and capacity of the base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment. In the 11.0 upgrade, discover what’s new for the following server roles:

First released in version 10.9, Esri is excited to bring new improvements to ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes. Available alongside Windows or Linux, this containerized architecture is optimized for scalability, maintainability, and resiliency and is managed and orchestrated using Kubernetes. This open-source system runs either in your organization’s Kubernetes platform or your cloud provider’s Kubernetes service.
