Adding Domains & Contingent Values within ArcGIS Pro

In our latest GeoMarvel Live! tutorial video, Dalton walks through the process of adding Domains and Contingent Values to a dataset within ArcGIS Pro. Domains allow users to establish a given set allowable values for a field. And Contingent Values provide a way to automate data updates by linking specific values together between multiple fields.

To begin, we’ll start by adding an open data layer “Alleys & Parking Lot” within the Washington DC area to ArcGIS Pro. For this demonstration we’ve already added two fields, Day of the Week and Time of Day. Then we’ll set domains and values for each of these fields.

Domains

Each new domain offers a “domain type” of range or coded values. For this example we’re using Coded Value Domains as the domain type for both fields, Days of the Week & Time of Day.

For the next step we need to apply the new Day domain that we just created. Once applied, we can see from the attribute table that the Day of The Week dropdown menu is now established with the list of allowable coded values that we created. Then we’ll repeat this process to establish a unique domain for the Time of Day domain.

Now that we have established how to create domains, apply them, and add additional values to them, it’s time to add Contingent Values to this dataset.

Contingent Values

To add new contingent values, first click back to the Fields Tab and locate the Contingent Values button in the top ribbon of ArcGIS Pro. To begin, we first need to add a new field group. Once prompted, create a name and add the appropriate fields to the group. In this case we’ll be adding Days of the Week & Time of Day. These two fields will now be tied together within this Contingent Value. And at this point, we can now start to associate values together.

Jumping back to the attributes table, if we click Day of the Week from the dropdown menu, we can see that the Time of Day value has now been auto-populated, based on the corresponding Contingent Values that we previously associated together.

This has been a brief overview on how to add Domains & Contingent Values within ArcGIS Pro. Learn more about Domains & Contingent Values within ArcGIS Pro, by visiting Esri‘s Resource page – Create and Manage contingent values.
