Getting Started with ArcGIS Notebooks

What is ArcGIS Notebooks

ArcGIS Notebooks are an integration with open-source web-based Python tool Jupyter Notebooks to allow users to perform data analytics and machine learning with their data. ArcGIS Notebooks are designed to allow users to code through a web-based interface that is already connected to your data. Notebooks are created like content within ArcGIS Online or can be created through an Enterprise portal.

What Can I do with Notebooks?

A standard notebook opens and by default imports the ArcGIS library to use. This library allows users to manage their organization programmatically. With the open-source GIS library, users can create and delete users, content, Web Maps, as well as update sharing and run analysis on their organization as a whole.

The ArcGIS Notebook also allows users to perform data analysis, geocoding, and more through Python and their integration with Jupyter Notebooks.

Esri Support for Notebooks

Online, users can expect to find lots of examples and documentation of how to utilize the ArcGIS library with examples and code snippets for how to use different functionalities within the library. Notebooks also utilize the power of the display library, which allows Notebooks users to see and display content and Web Maps within the Notebook itself.

Some examples of using Notebooks

Using ArcGIS Notebooks, I am able to search users within my organization, or even myself, and find content belonging to me, groups that I am in, as well as my user profile, all of which is documented by Esri’s ArcGIS for developers pages.

I am also able to search for and display my content from within the Notebook itself, allowing me to search and view results with a streamlined user experience, view or display maps that I have made, and manage my content from the Notebook itself.

In addition to managing my organization and content, users are also able to perform data analysis and geocoding tasks. In this example, users can create buffers around features, and with analysis tools available within Notebooks and with lots of documentation and example code to follow for your workflows.
